Tips / How to Use a Mac /

6 - Using CDs & DVDs

1 - Avoid CDs & DVDs

Bring your photographs to class on a USB flash drive, rather than on a CD or DVD.

There are three reasons.

Convenience

During, and at the end of class, you'll save your photographs by burning them to a CD or DVD.

Burning is a time-consuming process.

And, every time you save your work, you'll need to use a new disc.

You can reuse discs only if you use erasable CD-RW and DVD-RW discs.

If you have a Mac at home, you can use multisession burning.

However, it's a complicated process.

If you're using a Windows computer at home, there are two more reasons.

Windows Computer Discs from Home

May Not Open

Generally, Macs can read discs from a Windows computer.

However, occasionally, a Windows computer disc from home won't open in class on a Mac.

Mac Discs Won't Open at Home

You'll save your photographs at the end of class by burning them to a disc.

A disc burned in class on a Mac may not open on your Windows computer at home.

MacDrive (about $50) is an example of a program that will open Mac files on Windows computers.

2 - Disc Formats

Generally, you can use CD-R and CD-RW discs, or DVD-R and DVD-RW discs.

You can erase and reuse "RW" discs, but not "R" discs.

Don't use DVD+R and DVD+RW discs.

If you're not sure what type of discs you can burn, do the following.

Using the Go menu, go to Applications > Utilities > System Profiler > Hardware > Disc Burning.

Look for the media types listed after CD–Write and DVD–Write.

3 - Insert a Disc

Slot

If there's a slot, push the disc in until it's grabbed by the Mac.

Tray

If there's a tray, do one of the following.

• Press the Eject key.

The key has an upward pointing arrow with a horizontal line underneath.

It's located in the top right position on the keyboard.

• If your keyboard doesn't have an eject key, press the F12 key, and hold it down for a few seconds.

Don't press and release the key quickly.

Otherwise, Dashboard will open.

• Press Command + e.

• Go to File > Eject.

4 - Create a Save Folder

Click File on the Finder menu bar at the top of the monitor screen, and select New Folder.

Name the folder Save.

5 - Create a Burn Folder

Click File on the Finder menu bar at the top of the monitor screen, and select New Burn Folder.

A folder with a yellow/black burn icon will appear on the Desktop.

• Go to File > Burn Disc.

• Press Control and click on the Save folder, and select Burn Disc.

• Drag the Save folder icon onto Trash in the Dock.

The Trash icon will turn into a Burn icon.

• In a Finder window, in the top of the sidebar, you'll see the blank disc.

Click the burn icon that's to the right of the blank disc icon.

8) Click Burn in the confirmation window.

9) After the burn, open the the disc drive icon to make sure your photographs are on the disc.

Erase RW Discs

If you want to re-use a CD-RW disc, or a DVD-RW disc, you need to erase it using Disk Utility.

1) Using the Go menu, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.

2) Click the Erase tab.

3) Select the disc you want to erase on the left side of the window.

4) When erasing CD-RW and DVD-RW discs, there's no need to enter anything in the Volume Format or Name boxes.

5) Click Erase.

8 - Burn More than Once to a Disc

Burning more than once to the same disc is called multisession burning.

Note #1

If you have a Mac at home, you can burn multiple times to the same CD, but not to a DVD.

Windows-computer users can't use multisession burning in class because Windows computers can't read the disk image file (.dmg) that's used.

Note #2

This tutorial is for OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

For other versions of OS X, go to Mac OS X: How to burn a multi-session CD.

Steps

1) Using the Go menu, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.

2) Go to File > New > Disc Image from Folder.

3) In the Select Folder to Image window, find and select the Save folder.

This is the folder you created for saving your photographs.

4) Click Image in the bottom right corner of the Select Folder to Image window.

5) In the New Image from Folder window, do the following.

• In the Save As box, enter Image1 as the name for your disk image.

• In the Where box, select Desktop.

• In the Image Format box, select read/write.

• In the Encryption box, select None.

• Click Save.

6) When the disk image has finished processing, a Disk Utility window will appear with Image1.dmg (or the name you selected) at the top.

Do the following.

• Select the disk image, Image1.dmg, on the left side of the window.

• Click Burn, in the top right corner of the window.

q

7) The drive door will open.

Insert a blank CD (no DVDs).

A Burn window will appear.

Select the following.

• Use the default speed, such as Maximum Possible (24x).

• If you're using a CD-RW disc that's full, check Erase disc before burning.

• Be sure to check Leave disc appendable.

• Check Verify burned data

• Eject disc

• If you want to check the disc, check Mount on Desktop.

After burning, you'll find the disc on the Desktop.

• Click Burn.

10) Eject the disk image file.

To add more disk image files to the disc later, follow the above steps to create a new disk image, with a different name, such as Image2.

When you use the disc again, the Burn window will not have a Burn button.

Instead, look for the Append button.

At home, use DropDMG, a download available from Apple, to make the above process easier.

You can also use Roxio's Toast or Easy Media Creator 9 Suite.

9 - Eject a Disc

Do one of the following.

• Press the Eject key.

The key has an upward pointing arrow with a horizontal line underneath.

It's located in the top right position on the keyboard.

• If your keyboard doesn't have an eject key, press the F12 key, and hold for a few seconds.

If you press and release the key quickly, Dashboard will open.

• Press Command + e.

• Press Control, click on the drive icon, and select Eject.

• Drag the icon for the disk drive to the Trash icon in the Dock.

10 - Disc Won't Eject

Photoshop Elements Is Still Running

If Photoshop Elements is still running, your disc may not eject until the program is closed.

The program is running if there's a black triangle below the Photoshop Elements icon in the Dock.

Go to Close Photoshop Elements.

Photoshop Elements Is Not Running

If Photoshop Elements isn't running, and you've tried the above eject commands, do the following:

1) Click Apple on the Finder menu bar at the top of the monitor screen, and select Restart.

2) Hold down the mouse button when you hear the startup sound as the computer restarts.

To continue, use the menu above, or click Back.
