You have to periodically migrate your files for two reasons:

1) Dyes fade

2) Technology changes

Let's look at each reason for migrating your files.

Dyes Fade

The dyes used in discs fade.

You must migrate files from old discs onto new ones periodically.

How often depends on the color of the dyes used, storage conditions, and other factors.

Also, discs can suffer mechanical damage and other woes.

How often must you migrate your files?

Technology Changes

You may discover one day that you can't open photographs that are stored on CDs.

That's because you'll buy a computer someday that doesn't have the software or hardware to do so.

So, as the technology changes, you must migrate your files from the old technology to the new.
