Tools

(Photoshop Elements 10 & Earlier)

Here's the layout of the tools.

q

Photoshop Elements is a powerful program.

So—there are lots of tools.

Great!

But—there are lots of tools.

Ouch!

Learning to use the tools is difficult.

Not because they're difficult to use—because the tools are hard to find.

You have to:

• Learn the icons.

• Know which tools are members of tool families.

You can't see all the members of a tool family at the same time.

Select a Tool

Click the icon of a tool to select it.

Help

If you hover over a tool icon, a help menu appears.

If you're online, click for a description of the tool.

q

Keyboard Shortcuts

The tools have keyboard shortcuts.

You press a letter to select the tool.

Look for the letter in the parentheses after the name of the tool.

A Tool Is Always Selected

A tool is selected at all times.

If you're not using a tool, "park" the tools on the Zoom tool by pressing z.

Accessing Tool Families

Tools with tool families have a tiny black arrow in the lower-right corner of the tool icon.

To see the members of the tool family, do the following.

Windows

Do one of the following.

• Right click on the tool icon.

• Left click and hold on the tool icon.

Mac

Do one of the following.

• Right click on the tool icon.

Some Mac mice don't have a right-click button.

If so, press and hold Ctrl (not Cmd), and click on the tool icon.

• Left click and hold on the tool icon.

The Tools

If the name of a tool is underlined, click it to go to a tutorial using the tool.
