Greeting Cards/Invitations

Beginner?

If you're new to Photoshop Elements, make a greeting card by going to Create > Greeting Cards.

Follow the directions.

Don't Like the Templates?

If you don't like the greeting-card templates in Photoshop Elements, follow the directions below.

Paper

This tutorial uses 8.5 x 11 inch paper.

You'll fold this letter-sized paper twice to make the card.

Use a thin paper so you can fold it easily.

If you like making the greeting card, purchase greeting-card paper and envelopes.

Open a Blank File

When you open a photograph in Photoshop Elements, there's a canvas underneath the photograph that you don't see.

We'll create a canvas without a photograph.

Then, we'll place your photograph and text on the canvas.

Do the following.

1) Go to File > New > Blank File or press Ctrl + n.

2) Select the following in the New window.

Name:

Enter a name for your greeting card, such as, Greeting Card.

Width:

11 inches

Height:

8.5 inches

Resolution:

300

Background Contents: White

Display a Grid

To make layout easier, create a grid.

The grid won't print.

1) At the top of your screen, go to Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grids (Windows) or Photoshop Elements > Preferences > Guides & Grids (Mac).

2) Select the following in the Grid section.

Color:

Select a color that will stand out from your photograph, such as red.

Style:

Lines

Grid line every:

50 percent

Subdivisions:

3) Click OK.

If you don't see the grid, go to View >
Grid.

The thicker, solid lines, divide the canvas into quadrants.

Each quadrant becomes one of the four sides of the card.

The red numbers and yellow highlighting were added to make it easier to see the quadrants.

q

Hide the Grid

The grid can be distracting.

If so, hide it by doing the following.

Press Ctrl + ' (Windows) or Cmd + ' (Mac).

' = apostrophe.

Repeat the command to make the grid reappear.

Layout

The layout in each quadrant is below.

Note how some quadrants are upside down.

q

Huh?

It's hard to visualize how the above becomes a card.

Grab a piece of copy paper.

Write and sketch your design in each quadrant, using the above template as your guide.

Then, fold it into a card prototype.

Open & Edit the Photograph

For the Front (Quadrant 4)

Open the photograph that you'll be placing on the front of the card (quadrant 4).

Edit the photograph, as needed.

Save the photograph as a JPEG, renaming it to, say, DSC_12345-card.jpg.

File > Place

Next, we'll import DSC_12345-card.jpg into the Greeting Card file.

Make sure you're editing the Greeting Card file—not the DSC_12345-card.

Double click the Greeting-Card-file thumbnail in the photo bin.

q

Do the following.

1) Go to File > Place.

2) Browse to the folder containing DSC_12345-card.jpg.

3) Select the DSC_12345-card.jpg.

4) Click Place.

DSC_12345-card.jpg appears as a layer in the Greeting Card file.
