Size & Resolution > Change the Size >

3 - Resample Image Box Unchecked

Next, let's uncheck Resample Image.

The original photograph has a resolution of 300 ppi.

q

The original photograph was 6.6 x 10 inches.

6.6" q
  10"

Let's make it smaller like we did before—changing the width from 10 to 5 inches.

3.3" q
  5"

But, this time, we'll uncheck the Resample Image box.

1) Enter 5 in the width box.

The height changes to 3.324 inches.

The resolution changes from 300 ppi to 601 ppi.

q

The higher resolution reflects the increased concentration of the pixels.

The size decreased by half, from 10 inches to 5 inches.

So, the resolution doubled, from 300 ppi to 602 ppi

Let's use white dots to represent the size, or concentration, of the pixels.

Original Version - 300 ppi

The Pixels Are Larger - Less Concentrated

Resized Version - 602 ppi

The Pixels Are Smaller - More Concentrated

Above, we changed a dimension with Resample Image unchecked.

Now, let's change a dimension with Constrain Proportions unchecked.
