Make a Background Copy

Copy the Background layer.

There are several ways to do so.

Right Click

Right clicking on the Background layer, and select Duplicate Layer.

Drag

Click, hold, and drag the Background layer onto the Create a new layer icon at the top of the Layers palette.

Keyboard Shortcut

Press Ctrl + j.

Edit the Background Copy Layer

Use the Background copy layer for editing.

Click on the Background copy layer to select it.

When selected, a layer is highlighted with blue.
