The Harder Way to Update

The instructions below are for Photoshop Elements 8.0.

Go to Windows or Mac.

Windows

1) Close Photoshop Elements.

2) Download the latest camera raw update to My Download Files (XP), Download (Vista), or Downloads (Windows 7).

3) Go to where you downloaded, and look for Camera_Raw_x_y.zip.

The file is a zip file.

It contains the file you need.

4) Double click Camera_Raw_x_y.zip.

If you can't open the zip file, go to Zip Files.

Inside the zip folder, you'll see a file called Camera Raw.8bi.

Leave the window open.

5) Go to My Computer (XP) or Computer (Vista & Windows 7).

6) Navigate using the path below.

If you can't find the folders below on your computer, go to Hidden Files & Folders.

C: > Program Files > Common Files > Adobe > Plug-Ins > Elements 8 > File Formats

Don't use the path below for 8.0.

The path for previous versions was different.

C: > Program Files > Adobe > Photoshop Elements > Plug-Ins > File Formats

7) In the File Formats folder, you'll see the existing camera raw plug-in.

Camera Raw.8bi

Change the name of this existing file.

For example, add _old to its name.

Camera Raw_old.8bi

If there's something wrong with the new version, delete the new version.

Then, use the old file after changing its name back to its original name.

You now have two windows open: the zip file and the File Formats folder.

8) Copy the new camera raw plug-in file—Camera Raw.8bi—from the zip file window—to the File Formats folder.

9) Close the two windows.

10) Open Photoshop Elements.

7) In the FileFormats folder, you'll see the existing camera raw plug-in: Camera Raw.plugin

Camera Raw.plugin.

Change the name of this existing file.

For example, add _old to its name.

Camera Raw_old.plugin.

If there's something wrong with the new version, delete the new version.

Then, use the old file after changing its name back to its original name.

You now have two windows open: the CameraProfiles folder and the FileFormats folder.

8) Copy the new camera raw plug-in file—Camera Raw.plugin—from the CameraProfiles folder—to the FileFormats folder.

9) Close the two windows.
