How to Transfer Photographs

To a Flash Drive

If you're not familiar with flash drives, go to USB Flash Drives.

If you've moved files from one folder to another, with a word processing program, you already know how to move photographs around.

There are many steps below, but that's because this tutorial is written for computer neophytes.

Despite all of the steps, it's easy to move photographs around.

PC

This section describes how to transfer your photographs from My Pictures to your flash drive.

1) Insert the flash drive into a USB port on your computer.

2) Click the green Windows Start button at the bottom left of the screen.

3) Open My Computer and look for the flash drive.

The flash drive will be there, along with your hard drive (C:) and disc drive (D: and maybe E:).

The flash drive may be E: or F:.

The name if the drive may be Removable Disk, or the name of the manufacturer of the flash drive .

4) Open the flash drive.

5) If you wish, create a new folder for the photographs on the flash drive.

Right click on a white area inside the flash drive folder window, select New, and select Folder.

You can change the name of the new folder by highlighting its name, New Folder, and entering the new name.

Let's say you named the folder Class 1.

6) Reduce the size of the flash drive window.

You should still be able to see the Class 1 folder you created.

7) Click the green Windows Start button at the bottom left of the screen and open My Pictures.

8) Find the folder containing the photographs you want to copy to the flash drive.

Open the folder.

Let's say the folder is called Paris 2007.

9) Reduce the size of the Paris 2007 folder window.

You should still be able to see the files you want to transfer in the window.

You now have two windows open:

• The flash drive window with the Class 1 folder

• The Paris 2007 folder window.

10) Select the photographs in the Paris 2007 folder window.

Select Only One File

By placing the cursor over a file, and clicking, you can select one file.

Select More Than One File

By holding down Shift, and clicking on files, you can select more than one file.

Select Several Files in a Column

To select a series of photographs, click on the file that's at the top of the stack of photographs that you want to select.

Hold down Ctrl, and click on the file that's at the bottom of the stack that you want to select.

All of the files between the "two clicks" will be selected.

11) Place the cursor over the selected files, right click, and select Copy.

The selected files have been copied.

12) Go to the flash drive window, place the cursor over the Class 1 folder, right click, and select Paste.

Your photographs will be pasted into the Class 1 folder.

PC & Using Photoshop Elements Organizer

This section describes how to transfer your photographs from the Organizer, which is a section in Photoshop Elements, to your flash drive.

1) Insert the flash drive into a USB port on your computer.

2) Open My Computer and look for the flash drive.

The flash drive will be there, along with your hard drive (C:) and disc drive (D: and maybe E:).

The flash drive may be E: or F:.

The name if the drive may be Removable Disk, or the name of the manufacturer of the flash drive .

3) Open the flash drive.

4) If you wish, create a new folder for the photographs on the flash drive.

Right click on a white area inside the flash drive folder window, select New, and select Folder.

You can change the name of the new folder by highlighting its name, New Folder, and entering the new name.

Let's say you named the folder Class 1.

5) Open the Organizer section in Photoshop Elements.

6) Find the collection containing the photographs you want to copy to the flash drive.

Let's say the collection is called Paris 2007.

7) Select the photographs in the Paris 2007 collection.

Select Only One Photograph

By placing the cursor over a thumbnail, and clicking, you can select the thumbnail.

Select More Than One Photograph

By holding down Shift, and clicking on the thumbnails, you can select more than one thumbnail.

Select Many Photographs

In Consecutive Order

To select thumbnails that are in consecutive order, click on the first thumbnail.

Hold down Ctrl, and click on the thumbnail that's at the end.

All of the thumbnails between the "two clicks" will be selected.

8) Place the cursor over the selected files, right click, and select Copy.

Or, press Ctrl + c.

The selected files have been copied.

9) Go back to the flash drive window, place the cursor over the Class 1 folder, right click, and select Paste.

Or, press Ctrl + v.

Your photographs, not just the thumbnails, will be pasted into the Class 1 folder.

Mac

1) Insert the flash drive into a USB port on your computer.

2) Open a Finder window by clicking on the Faces icon at the bottom of your screen, on the far left, in the Dock.

Or, press Command (Cmd) + n.

The Command (Cmd) key is to the left of the space bar, and may have an Apple or Cloverleaf icon.

3) Look for the flash drive in the Finder window.

There's a column on the left side of the Finder window.

The column is divided into a top part and a bottom part.

Your flash drive will appear in the top part.

The name of the drive may be the name of the manufacturer of the flash drive, or the name may be No Name.

4) Double click the flash drive to open it.

5) If you wish, create a new folder for the photographs on the flash drive.

Go to File > New Folder, or press Shift + Cmd + n.

You can change the name of the new folder by doing the following.

a) Click the name of the folder.

b) Press Return or Enter.

c) Enter the new name.

Let's say you named the folder Class 1.

6) Reduce the size of the flash drive window.

You should still be able to see the Class 1 folder you created.

7) Open a second Finder window by pressing Cmd + n.

8) Find the folder containing the photographs you want to copy to the flash drive.

Your photographs are probably in a folder called Pictures.

This folder is located in the bottom half of the column on the left side of the Finder window.

If you use iPhoto, browse to your photographs using the pathway below.

Pictures > iPhoto Library > Originals > Years (2007, 2006, etc.) > Film Rolls

9) Look for the folder containing the photographs you want to transfer.

Let's say your the folder with the photographs you want to transfer is called Paris 2007.

Open the Paris 2007 folder.

10) Reduce the size of the Paris 2007 folder window.

You should still be able to see the files you want to transfer in the window.

You now have two windows open:

• The flash drive with the Class 1 folder

• The Paris 2007 folder.

11) Select the photographs in the Paris 2007 folder window.

12) To copy and move the files, press and hold Option, and drag the files from the Paris 2007 folder window to the Class 1 folder in the flash drive window.
